A first rate novel and presentation of life at a GM pressing plant and the " types " that worked there, workers and management. The stories of the workers' lives as they lead up to the wildcat strike, and it's swift conclusion, is the human close line of the novel. However, this group of characters goes away almost as fast as the strike comes and goes, and the aftermath, while heart rending and perceptive, just does not tie it all together for me. I never found out what happened to several of the key characters in whom I became interested.Having said what I have, I would also highly recommend Wildcat. Why not? I enjoyed it right up to the last couple of pages, and up to that point I was really involved in all the characters' lives.

A very Informative Report that took place in Mid- Ohio, USA , on the treatment of the Working Class Autoworkers during the Mid 50's and up thru the 90's and beyond . This is the side of the coin we never heard about . A person might find it hard to believe that this really could happen , but it could ! Mainly what was wanted and desired by the Working Class Autoworkers ,(the people who actually built, stamped , assembled , the automobile parts, and later the automobiles) , was a Fair Days Wage for a Fair Days Work . This is the struggle the Autoworker Unions had , with on occasions a slightly humorous outcome , but nevertheless , at times ,true to the core. A Must Read , if your collar is blue , and even if not . Very Well Written , and I Highly Recommend reading this .
The author provides an insightful yet vivid account on the state of industrial relations of the big three in the 1970s, a mindset that focused on internal social stratification rather than external competition. The consequences to the big three is well known by the millions of Americans who drive autos and trucks from foreign flagship companies such as Honda and Toyota.
Perhaps IPO investors in the soon to be "New" GM might encourage the new management team to read Pancoast's work. Otherwise the Chinese auto industry might benefit from the big three's reluctance to learn from the past.
A quick, enjoyable, easy read. If you've ever been in an automotive factory you will see there is more truth in this book than there is fiction. The characters are everyday people who work hard, but each has their own story to tell of life's hardships. I really enjoyed this story of what labor relations could have been like back in the 70's. It's not far from the truth still today.
Ever wonder what it was like in the times leading up to American excess and prosperity?
Well, I was curious as to the spoils the autoworkers and baby boomers fought for.
Mr. Pancoast, while providing a fun read, sheds light on the building of the middle class
and the contributing factors leading to the present unraveling of industrial America.
As a young woman giving factory work a try, I witnessed many of the things Pancoast writes about -- especially what can happen to a worker unfortunate enough to suffer a life-changing injury. I watched a major corporation ruin the life of a woman who lost her hand in an industrial accident. She was nothing but another piece of machinery in the corporation's eyes. I'm glad someone wrote about the world and people I left behind. Pancoast, through his story-telling in "Wildcat", makes the stamping plant come alive by showing real people in real struggles. But more than that he shows the reader how industry in the U.S. came to be where it is today. A must read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Pancoast sets up all the characters in the story in a series of short chapters. The characters seem only related to each other by their relationship to the stamping plant. At the end of the story Pancoast ties them all together in a riveting finale.
I never thought I would enjoy a novel about auto workers in the 1970's, but I couldn't put this little book down! Small enough to read in not much more than one sitting, it still manages to explain the Vietnam era the the life of the factory workers in a GM plant in Ohio with surprising clarity and thoroughness. The lives of these workers are both entertaining and heartbreaking, and the reader feels their frustrations, anger, and pride. Read this book if you lived through that time, and you will remember when factory workers were the backbone of America. Read it if you're too young to remember, and it will explain an era and an industry better than any history book can.
